The Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) gracefully hosted our first ever DevCon Java Camp held at the Santa Maria III Ballroom in Radisson Blu Hotel, Cebu City last 10 June 2011 as part of the Cebu Business Month 2011: Business Beyond Boundaries.The program was emceed by Dr. Gregg Victor Gabison, DevCon Foundation founding member and University of San Jose – Recoletos (USJ-R) CICCT Dean. DevCon Foundation President Jerry Rapes delivered the opening remarks followed by a short speech from CCCI Trustee Virgilio Espeleta.
The plenary sessions were as follows: Java on the Cloud with Google App Engine by Edgar Dalmacio, Working with Location-Based Services on Android by Charo Nuguid, Maven 101 by Gwen Autencio, Spring Roo by Ed Solis, and Performance Engineering by Franz See.
In the afternoon, we also had a Birds of a Feather (BoF) segment on Scrum vs. eXtreme Programming where representatives from USJ-R defending Scrum were hailed as winners. During the last part of the camp, we conducted a Hackathon in which the participants created a web-based Java application for event registration. The team from the University of San Carlos won P5,000.
Our partners for the said event are CCCI, the Association of Filipino Java Developers (PinoyJUG), Philippine Development Foundation (PhilDev – formerly Ayala Foundation USA),Morphlabs, Inc., IBM Philippines, and Exist Software Labs, Inc. In this event alone, our IBM developerWorks community at devworks.devcon.ph has grown to about 150 members!
